    As Transmitted to the Governor

HB 2074 continues the Arizona Board of Athletic Training (Board) until July 1, 2020.

    History

The Board was created by the Legislature in 2000 to protect and ensure the public’s health, safety and welfare though licensure and regulation of athletic trainers (trainers).  The Board has the ability to set minimum standards, principles of good practice, and disciplinary measures for trainers.

The initial licensure application fee is $250 and in its 10 years the Board has not increased fees nor overspent an appropriation.  The Board uses private contractors for website maintenance and updates, as well as for accounting purposes.

The Board receives, investigates and adjudicates complaints within an average of 120 days.  It takes no longer than 30 days for the Board to process a new application if all requirements are met.  In Fiscal Year 2008 the Board received 75 new applications.  As of June 30, 2009 the Board has licensed 560 individuals.

During the 2009 interim, the House Government Committee of Reference and the Senate Commerce and Economic Development Committee of Reference held a sunset hearing and approved a recommendation to continue the Board for 10 years.

    Provisions

    ·          Continues the Board, retroactive to July 1, 2010, until July 1, 2020.

    ·          Contains a purpose statement.
